GEP SMART is a unified source-to-pay suite that provides a single platform for sourcing, contracts, procurement, invoicing, and supplier management. MESH Works is a supplier discovery and audit platform for manufactured parts. It identifies manufacturers outside your current network and arranges for an engineer to visit their facility before you make a commitment.
These platforms support different stages of the procurement process. GEP manages procurement with existing suppliers, while MESH facilitates the onboarding of new suppliers.

What Is GEP SMART?
GEP SMART is GEP's cloud-native source-to-pay platform. It supports strategic sourcing and RFx, direct material sourcing based on the BOM, contract lifecycle management, procure-to-pay, supplier information and performance management, quality management, and spend analytics. This platform consolidates functions that many organizations manage across four or five separate systems.
GEP SMART is recognized as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Source-to-Pay Suites and manages approximately $350 billion in client procurement spend. It is one of the few vendors in this category that combines software with a large services organization. GEP's consultants can manage a category event on your behalf, rather than simply providing system access. This combination is especially valuable if you require greater process control or have limited procurement resources.
What it assumes, like every suite in this category, is that you already know who your suppliers are.
What Is MESH Works?
MESH Works is a sourcing and supplier management platform designed for manufactured parts, including castings, forgings, machined components, stampings, fabrications, moulded plastics, and electronics assemblies.
MESH Works operates one step before a typical source-to-pay suite. Before initiating a sourcing event, you need to determine who else can manufacture the part and whether they meet your standards.
Supplier discovery. 19K+ manufacturers across 40+ countries, searchable the way a sourcing engineer actually thinks — by process (high-pressure die casting, investment casting, forging, CNC machining, stamping, injection moulding), by commodity, by certification (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100, ISO 13485), by capacity band, and by region. Not a keyword search across self-written company descriptions.
In-person factory audits. 4K+ suppliers have been visited on site by a MESH engineer and assessed against 45 points covering manufacturing capability, equipment and tonnage, engineering and tooling, quality systems, capacity and logistics — documented with factory photographs and video. When you open an audited supplier in MESH, the floor has already been walked. You are reading someone else's site visit instead of scheduling your own.
RFQ management. Issue structured RFQs to multiple manufacturers based on drawings and specifications, and receive responses in a standardized format.
AI quote normalisation. Quotes come back in whatever format each manufacturer uses, piece price buried in a PDF, tooling amortised differently, freight in or out. MESH converts them into one comparable structure so you're comparing the same thing.
Reverse auctions. Competitive bidding among manufacturers who have already been qualified, not among whoever responded.
Supplier scorecards and sourcing analytics. Performance tracking, savings, cycle time, and dual-source coverage by commodity.
Audit Management vs Audit Execution
This distinction is critical and more precise than stating "GEP doesn't do audits," since GEP does conduct audits.
GEP SMART's Direct Materials Quality Management module offers Quality Audit Management, including vendor audits, supplier self-assessments, audit document archiving, ISIR and PPAP submissions, deviation requests, complaint management, and APQP. For supplier quality teams, GEP provides a comprehensive system to manage their programs.
What it doesn't do is go to the factory.
GEP manages the audit process, but your team conducts the actual audits. For example, a supplier quality engineer travels to the site, inspects operations, reviews control plans, and provides final approval. This engineer is part of your staff, their travel costs are your responsibility, and their availability limits how many new suppliers you can qualify each quarter.
MESH performs the audit. It is already done, on 4K+ suppliers, before you ever contact them.
GEP SMART | MESH Works | |
Audit workflow and document management | Yes | — |
Supplier self-assessment forms | Yes | — |
ISIR / PPAP / APQP management | Yes | — |
Physical visit to the factory | Your team performs it | MESH engineers perform it |
Audit exists before you engage the supplier | No — you commission it | Yes, on 4K+ suppliers |
Factory photographs and video on file | Whatever your team captured | Standard on audited suppliers |
These are two distinct challenges. GEP addresses the governance issue by ensuring your supplier quality program is documented and auditable. MESH addresses the capacity issue by providing audit coverage when you lack the engineering resources to qualify multiple new suppliers within a limited timeframe.
Supplier Discovery: The Overlooked Constraint
Every source-to-pay suite, including GEP, Coupa, Ariba, and JAGGAER, relies on a fundamental but often unstated assumption: you already know who your suppliers are.
That holds for indirect spend. It holds for the eighty per cent of direct spend running through incumbents. It breaks the moment a sourcing manager is asked a question like:
Which manufacturers can cast this housing in A380 at 40,000 units a year, outside China?
We're dual-sourcing this forging. Who else has a 2,500-tonne press and IATF 16949?
This supplier's lead time has gone from six weeks to sixteen. Who can take the volume?
Section 232 just moved our aluminium landed cost. Who's qualified in Mexico?
Our single source for this machined component is in a region we've been told to exit.
A sourcing optimization engine can determine the best allocation among known suppliers. However, it cannot identify suppliers who are not already included.
In practice, this gap is typically addressed through informal methods such as online searches, trade shows, personal contacts, or unverified directories. A quality engineer then visits the facility to confirm its legitimacy. This process often takes six to nine months per new supplier, which is the primary reason sourcing decisions default to incumbents, even when they present challenges.
MESH Works addresses this gap by providing pre-audited suppliers, reducing the onboarding process from several months to a matter of weeks.
Where GEP SMART Is the Better Choice
There are four scenarios where a source-to-pay suite is the preferred choice over MESH:
You need the transactional layer. Including procure-to-pay, invoicing, payments and contract lifecycle management. MESH does not support these functions.
If your scope includes indirect spend such as IT, facilities, professional services, travel, or MRO, note that MESH is limited to manufactured parts only.
If you prefer a single platform for sourcing, contracts, procure-to-pay, and analytics, GEP offers significant operational value.
If you need consulting support in addition to software, GEP’s services organization can manage category events on your behalf.
Where MESH Works Fills the Gap
You require manufacturers outside your current network, whether for dual sourcing, regional diversification, exiting a market, replacing an underperforming supplier, or launching a new program in an unfamiliar commodity.
You need a thorough factory assessment before committing. Instead of relying on supplier self-assessments, you require an engineer’s report with photographs and video of the production floor.
Your supplier quality team is the bottleneck. You have more suppliers to qualify than engineers to send, and the qualification queue is what's holding up the award.
You are sourcing to specification, such as castings, forgings, machining, stamping, fabrication, moulding, or electronics assembly, where capability depends on equipment and capacity rather than catalogue SKUs.
You need to move inside one sourcing cycle. No ERP integration, no multi-quarter implementation. Teams typically run their first RFQ within weeks.
You need quotes you can actually compare. Eleven manufacturers returning eleven formats, normalised into one structure so the comparison is real.
Tariffs or policy just changed your cost base. For example section 232 on steel, aluminium and copper moves landed cost faster than a qualification programme can respond. Pre-audited suppliers in alternative regions are the only way to react inside a quarter.
Using Both
These solutions are not mutually exclusive. Most companies that use MESH already operate a suite such as GEP, Ariba, Coupa, or JAGGAER.
MESH expands the supplier base, while GEP manages procurement activities across these suppliers.
A practical sequence:
MESH: Identify qualified manufacturers in approved regions.
MESH: Review on-site audit results, including equipment, capacity, quality systems, and certifications.
MESH: Issue the RFQ, normalise the quotes, run a reverse auction if the volume justifies it
GEP SMART: Onboard the selected supplier, draft and execute the contract
GEP SMART: Manage requisitions, purchase orders, invoices, and payments.
GEP SMART: Track supplier performance, manage quality events, and monitor risk
MESH: When re-sourcing a category or replacing a supplier, restart the process from the first step.
There is no duplication of effort. MESH concludes with supplier selection, and GEP begins with supplier relationship management.
