Aluminum Alloys and What They're Used For
Alloy choice usually follows the manufacturing process rather than the other way round. Knowing which alloy your part calls for narrows the supplier list faster than anything else.
Die casting
A380 — the workhorse for high-pressure die casting in North America. Good castability, strength and thermal conductivity. Housings, brackets, covers, gearbox casings.
ADC12 — the equivalent widely used across Asia. Suppliers in India, Vietnam and China typically quote in ADC12; the two are close but not identical, so confirm which the drawing specifies.
A383 — better fill on thin walls and complex geometry.
A360 / A413 — chosen where pressure tightness and corrosion resistance matter more than ultimate strength.
Extrusion
6063 — architectural and general-purpose extrusion. Excellent surface finish, anodises well. Frames, enclosures, heat sinks, trim.
6061 — structural extrusion and machined stock. Higher strength than 6063, weldable, heat treatable to T6.
Sheet, stamping and fabrication
5052 — the standard forming alloy. Good corrosion resistance, not heat treatable. Enclosures, panels, brackets.
3003 — where formability matters more than strength.
Machined from billet or plate
6061-T6 — the default for machined components. Predictable, widely stocked.
7075 — high strength for aerospace and load-bearing parts. More expensive, harder to weld, needs surface protection.
2024 — aerospace applications requiring fatigue resistance.
If you're moving a part between regions, confirm the alloy equivalence explicitly. A drawing calling for A380 quoted by an Asian supplier in ADC12 is common — usually acceptable, but it should be an agreed deviation, not a discovery at PPAP.
How to Choose an Aluminum Supplier
Piece price is the easiest thing to compare and the least useful on its own. Tooling, scrap rate, secondary operations and freight usually move landed cost more than the quoted part price.
1. Match the process to the part, not the supplier

A supplier listing "aluminum" tells you nothing about which of these it can do well.
2. Check tolerance capability against your drawing
Indicative achievable tolerances:
HPDC — around ±0.1 mm on the first 25 mm, widening with dimension. Wall thickness typically 1.5–4 mm
CNC machining — ±0.025 to ±0.125 mm routinely; tighter with process control
Extrusion — governed by ANSI H35.2, looser than machining; profiles usually need a machined secondary operation for critical features
Stamping — ±0.1 to ±0.25 mm depending on material thickness and feature
If critical features are tighter than the primary process can hold, you need a supplier with in-house machining rather than two suppliers and a logistics problem.
3. Ask about porosity before you ask about price
Porosity is the defining constraint in aluminum die casting. Entrapped gas creates internal voids that can leak under pressure and blister during heat treatment.
If the part must hold pressure or be heat treated to T6, ask specifically:
Does the supplier run vacuum-assisted die casting?
What leak-test capability is in-house?
Is X-ray or CT inspection available, and is it in-line or sampled?
What scrap rate does the supplier report on comparable parts?
A supplier without a straight answer on porosity control isn't a fit for a pressure-tight part, however competitive the quote.
4. Size the machine to the part
A rough rule of thumb for HPDC is two to three tons of clamping force per square inch of projected area, including runners and overflows. A supplier whose largest machine is 800T cannot run a part that needs 1,200T, no matter how capable it is otherwise. Get the projected area calculated before shortlisting on tonnage.
5. Factor tooling lead time into the program
Die casting tooling typically runs 8 to 16 weeks before first samples, and longer for complex multi-slide dies. Extrusion dies are faster and cheaper — usually weeks rather than months. Where the program timeline is tight, this often decides the process, not the part design.
6. Understand the tariff position before comparing landed cost
Since April 2026, US Section 232 tariffs apply to the full customs value of covered products rather than only the metal content. That changed the arithmetic on offshore aluminum sourcing substantially. Rates depend on whether the part is classified as an aluminum article or a derivative, on origin, and on US metal content. USMCA-qualifying goods from Mexico and Canada are treated differently from Asian-origin parts — which is why nearshore die casting has become materially more competitive than the piece price alone suggests.
Why Supplier Qualification Matters
Finding an aluminum manufacturer online is relatively easy. Determining whether that supplier is actually suitable for a production program is considerably harder.
Procurement teams need to evaluate capabilities, certifications, capacity, quality systems, location, industry experience and manufacturing processes before moving a supplier into an approved sourcing pipeline.
