Aluminum Alloys and What They're Used For

Alloy choice usually follows the manufacturing process rather than the other way round. Knowing which alloy your part calls for narrows the supplier list faster than anything else.

If you're moving a part between regions, confirm the alloy equivalence explicitly. A drawing calling for A380 quoted by an Asian supplier in ADC12 is common — usually acceptable, but it should be an agreed deviation, not a discovery at PPAP. 

How to Choose an Aluminum Supplier

Piece price is the easiest thing to compare and the least useful on its own. Tooling, scrap rate, secondary operations and freight usually move landed cost more than the quoted part price.

A supplier listing "aluminum" tells you nothing about which of these it can do well.

2. Check tolerance capability against your drawing

Indicative achievable tolerances:

If critical features are tighter than the primary process can hold, you need a supplier with in-house machining rather than two suppliers and a logistics problem.

3. Ask about porosity before you ask about price

Porosity is the defining constraint in aluminum die casting. Entrapped gas creates internal voids that can leak under pressure and blister during heat treatment.

If the part must hold pressure or be heat treated to T6, ask specifically:

A supplier without a straight answer on porosity control isn't a fit for a pressure-tight part, however competitive the quote.

4. Size the machine to the part

A rough rule of thumb for HPDC is two to three tons of clamping force per square inch of projected area, including runners and overflows. A supplier whose largest machine is 800T cannot run a part that needs 1,200T, no matter how capable it is otherwise. Get the projected area calculated before shortlisting on tonnage.

5. Factor tooling lead time into the program

Die casting tooling typically runs 8 to 16 weeks before first samples, and longer for complex multi-slide dies. Extrusion dies are faster and cheaper — usually weeks rather than months. Where the program timeline is tight, this often decides the process, not the part design.

6. Understand the tariff position before comparing landed cost

Since April 2026, US Section 232 tariffs apply to the full customs value of covered products rather than only the metal content. That changed the arithmetic on offshore aluminum sourcing substantially. Rates depend on whether the part is classified as an aluminum article or a derivative, on origin, and on US metal content. USMCA-qualifying goods from Mexico and Canada are treated differently from Asian-origin parts — which is why nearshore die casting has become materially more competitive than the piece price alone suggests.

Finding an aluminum manufacturer online is relatively easy. Determining whether that supplier is actually suitable for a production program is considerably harder.

Q 1. Which aluminum alloy is used for die casting?

A380 is the most widely used high-pressure die casting alloy in North America, offering a good balance of castability, strength and thermal conductivity. ADC12 is the near-equivalent used across most of Asia, so suppliers in India, Vietnam and China will usually quote in ADC12. A383 is chosen for thin walls and complex geometry, and A360 or A413 where pressure tightness and corrosion resistance matter more than ultimate strength. Confirm alloy equivalence in writing before PPAP if the drawing and the quote don't match.

Q 2. What is the difference between aluminum die casting and extrusion?

Die casting forces molten aluminum into a steel die under high pressure, producing complex three-dimensional shapes close to net form. Extrusion pushes heated billet through a shaped die to produce a constant cross-section that is then cut to length. Choose die casting for complex geometry and integrated features; choose extrusion for parts with a uniform profile such as frames, heat sinks and enclosures. Extrusion tooling is considerably cheaper and faster to produce, but every profile change requires a new die.

Q 3. How long does it take to qualify a new aluminum supplier?

For most industrial buyers the qualification timeline is measured in months, and the majority of that time is spent before an RFQ is issued — identifying candidates, reviewing capability, checking certification and assessing the facility. The manufacturing assessment itself is usually the shortest part. Buyers working from pre-audited supplier data compress the discovery and vetting stages substantially, because capability and capacity have already been confirmed on site.

Q 4. Is Mexico or India cheaper for aluminum die casting?

Piece price is often lower in India, but landed cost frequently favours Mexico for US buyers once freight, lead time, inventory carrying cost and tariff treatment are included. Since April 2026 US Section 232 tariffs apply to the full customs value of covered aluminum products, and USMCA-qualifying goods from Mexico are treated differently from Asian-origin parts. Compare landed cost per part delivered, not quoted piece price.

Q 5. How do Section 232 tariffs affect imported aluminum parts?

Since 6 April 2026, Section 232 tariffs apply to the full customs value of covered products rather than only to the metal content. Articles made entirely or almost entirely of aluminum carry a 50% rate. Most derivative articles — cast, machined or fabricated components — carry 25%. A reduced 15% capped rate applies to certain metal-intensive industrial and electrical grid equipment through the end of 2027, and a June 2026 proclamation extended that treatment to agricultural equipment, residential HVAC and some industrial machinery. Products where covered metal is 15% or less of total weight fall outside the scope. Foreign-made parts using at least 85% US-melted metal qualify for a 10% rate. Rates have changed repeatedly, so confirm the current classification against the relevant HTSUS annexes before committing to a sourcing decision.

Porosity is internal voiding caused mainly by gas entrapped during the high-pressure injection cycle. It matters for two reasons: porous castings can leak under pressure, and heating them for T6 treatment can cause the trapped gas to expand and blister the surface. Where a part must be pressure-tight or heat treated, look for vacuum-assisted die casting, in-house leak testing, and X-ray or CT inspection capability.

ISO 9001 is the baseline quality management standard. Automotive programs generally require IATF 16949. ISO 14001 covers environmental management and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety — both increasingly required by customer codes of conduct. TISAX applies where the supplier handles sensitive design data, and RoHS and REACH apply to electronics and to parts entering the EU. Certification confirms that a system exists; it does not confirm capacity, equipment condition or delivery performance, which is what an on-site audit assesses.

Many can. Secondary operations commonly offered alongside casting or extrusion include CNC machining, anodising, powder coating, chromate conversion, deburring, welding, assembly and leak testing. Sourcing these from one supplier removes a handoff, shortens lead time and places responsibility for the finished part with a single party — usually worth more than a small piece-price saving from splitting the work.

Start by defining the process, alloy and tonnage or press size the part actually requires, then filter for suppliers with demonstrated capacity in that specific combination. The slow part is rarely the RFQ — it is finding and verifying candidates. Working from pre-audited supplier data removes most of that.
