Why forge it at all?

Because of where the grain ends up. The same component made three ways has three different internal structures — and that, not the shape, is what you are paying for.

Why does grain flow matter in a forged part?

Forging deforms solid metal, so the grain follows the contour of the component and strength runs along the load path. Machining the same shape from bar cuts straight grain wherever the contour crosses it. A casting has no directional grain at all. For parts under cyclic load, that difference decides service life.

Grain structure in a component machined from bar

Machined from bar

Grain runs straight through

Wherever the contour crosses the bar, the grain is severed. The geometry is free, but strength does not follow the shape.

Weakest in fatigue · most material wasted

No directional grain

Solidified structure is uniform but undirected, and porosity is a live risk. Complex shapes are easy; load-bearing duty is not.

Lower strength · highest geometric freedom

Grain flows with the contour

Deformation aligns the grain along the part, so strength sits where the load path needs it. This is the reason forging exists.

Highest fatigue strength · near-net material use

India’s forging base, in plain terms

India is one of the largest forging economies in the world, built around the automotive corridors. Suppliers run from specialised forging shops to integrated manufacturers with tool rooms, heat-treatment furnaces, machining cells and inspection under one roof.

Capability is supplier-specific and the spread is wide — presses from a few hundred tonnes to 2,000 T and above, plus hammers. What matters is whether one supplier’s equipment, alloy handling, temper control and machining line up with your part.

Seven questions to ask before the die is cut

Forging problems are expensive late: a worn die, a missed temper or an under-specified allowance all surface after tooling money is spent.

How do I evaluate an aluminium forging supplier in India?

Confirm the parting line and grain-flow direction, the specific press or hammer your part will run on, die ownership and expected die life, the heat-treatment route and its certification, billet source and chemistry, machining allowance per face, and the non-destructive testing plan.

01

Which way will the grain run on my part?

If they say“We forge to your drawing.”
Ask forThe proposed parting line, flash direction and a grain-flow plot from forging simulation. Grain direction relative to the load path is the entire reason you chose forging over casting.
02

Press or hammer — and which one runs my part?

If they say“We have presses up to 2,000 T.”
Ask forThe equipment list with tonnage, and the specific machine your part is scheduled on. Hammer and press produce different material flow, tolerances and surface condition.
03

Who owns the die, and what is its expected life?

If they say“Tooling is included.”
Ask forWritten ownership on the PO, expected die life in pieces, the resink policy, and who pays once that life is used. Forging dies wear — the second die is the one nobody quotes for.
04

What temper, and can you certify it?

If they say“We supply T6.”
Ask forThe heat-treatment route, furnace records, and hardness or tensile certificates per lot traceable to the billet heat. T6 on a delivery note is not a mechanical property.
05

Where does the billet come from?

If they say“Good-quality aluminium.”
Ask forMill certificates with chemistry, the billet supplier, and cut-weight control. Overweight billets show up as flash and cost; wrong chemistry shows up after heat treatment.
06

How much machining allowance is on the forging?

If they say“It’s a near-net forging.”
Ask forStock per face and the tolerance class quoted against. Machining allowance drives the finished-part cost more than the forging price does — and near-net means different things to different shops.
07

What non-destructive testing will you run?

If they say“Everything is inspected.”
Ask forThe NDT plan and sampling rate — ultrasonic, dye penetrant, and macro-etch for grain flow where the specification calls for it. For 7xxx and aerospace work, ask before the quote, not after the first lot.

Find suppliers

From billet to finished component

Most Indian forgers cover more of this route than buyers assume. What matters is which of those steps happen under their own roof.

  1. 01Billet
  2. 02Heating
  3. 03Forging
  4. 04Trimming
  5. 05Heat treatment

  7. 07Surface treatment
  8. 08Inspection & NDT

Why it matters here

Heat treatment sits in the middle of the chain, and it is where mechanical properties are actually created. When forging and heat treatment sit with one supplier, so does responsibility for the test certificate.

What to confirm

Whether heat treatment and NDT are in-house or subcontracted, and whether the special-process approval — NADCAP where relevant — covers the subcontractor too.

What a listing leaves out about a forger

Any directory can give you a forging company in Pune. None of them can tell you whether the grain will run the right way.

A directory tells you“Aluminium forging, Pune”
The press and hammer list by tonnage, and which machine your part would actually run on
A directory tells you“ISO 9001 certified”
Certificate scope and expiry, plus the heat-treatment furnaces and NDT equipment our engineer saw
A directory tells you“We supply T6”
Whether heat treatment is in-house, and whether test certificates trace back to the billet heat
A directory tells you“Tooling included”
Written die ownership, expected die life in pieces, and who pays for the resink
A directory tells you“Near-net forging”
The machining allowance per face — which decides the finished cost more than the forging price

Frequently asked questions

Aluminium alloy is shaped under controlled pressure between dies, on a press or hammer, usually while hot. The point is not just the shape: deformation aligns the metal's grain with the contour of the part, which is why forgings outperform castings and machined bar in fatigue.
